SPECIAL NOTE — Publisher-Deprecated Collectable
Condition Of Sale: You are buying a sealed collectable for the purpose of completing an Australian collection with this unique untouched Pre-Retail Stock of a very rare Day One first edition. The actual game insider the sealed box has been deprecated by the publisher (Ubisoft) which means the server running the game has been disconnected and is not playable. Collectors will desire to keep this item sealed, for it to never be opened, due to the potential gain expected due to zero supply and the discarding of worthless used copies creating scarcity, forcing significant price hikes.
Rare Game Collectors’ Analysis of: The Crew Wild Run Edition (Australia), Playstation 4
“When a publisher deprecates a PS4 title like The Crew Wild Run Edition, because of its online-requirement, from first glance this appears to be a dire situation for gamers. Obviously most used copies will become landfill. It would take more than a little faith to believe that a used copy of anything can gain value for a commercial collector, simply because there is too little scalability, per title. While gamers may lament an excellent title becoming non-playable, the reverse is true for collectors, or possibly gamers who are also collectors, if they develop a long-term view. Deprecation in this case is simply Ubisoft (the publisher) not wishing to continue paying for the server which ran this online-only game for around 10 years. Normally buying this game means purchasing a licence (with terms and conditions), essentially a portal into the server, where the player becomes a node on a MMO game. Publishers may (and do) make decisions over which sellers and players alike have no control, unless the publisher reconnects the server which runs the game. As that is remarkably unlikely, it seems this cloud has a silver lining, for those with genuine factory-sealed examples (especially flawless examples). Because this event has allowed for an unlikely situation, whereby a brand new and sealed item with no faults, in absolutely perfect condition can become considerably more collectable. Why? Simply because most owners will discard a game they cannot play, blithely considering it useless. But this could not be better for the savvy collector.
But this could not be better for the savvy collector
Because counter to the obvious, as the installed user-base approaches zero (non-playable), and the most plausible action for owners is to discard their used copy, those rare individuals who possess an (unopened) factory-sealed perfect copy will be a very, very small number. And any experienced videogame collector (over multiple decades) could tell you — most probably won’t — that small production runs, exclusives, and low volume of any collectable is the most obvious indicator for skyrocketing value. It may be an early speculation, but situations like this may indeed be the holy grail of collecting, in terms of commercial gain, and in any case, is likely destined for greatness.
Perhaps the most infamous of all videogames rise to collectable status after being dumped en-masse was the sensational New Mexico ET Videogame Fiasco, by Atari. While the circumstances and timeline differ, what is happening here is easily enough to make the case for obtaining a factory-sealed copy of The Crew Wild Run Edition (particularly Australia, far less of them made) for PS4, or a sealed carton if you can find it.
This presents an uncommon opportunity for enterprising collectors, as history shows anomalies in the videogame industry have translated into enormous investment growth for those who recognise the possibility and potential in a "buy and hold" strategy.” - Commercial Collectables Speculator
