Overview:

The 40mm f/2.0 Ultron SL II Aspherical Lens for Nikon from Voigtlander is an ultra-sharp manual focus lens for use on Nikon full frame DSLRs and SLRs.  When mounted on a camera with an APS-C size sensor the focal length translates to 60mm. The lens' manual focus action is very smooth and precise and its aspherical, multi-coated optics create sharp images with minimal aberration. Metering and exposure information is passed between lens and camera thanks to the lens' CPU which provides auto-functions with virtually every compatible Nikon 35mm and digital SLR.

Included with the 40mm F/2.0 Ultron is a  close-up (macro) conversion lens that offers a minimum focus distance of 9.85" (25 cm). The close-up lens is attached via a 52-39mm adapter. In addition to attaching the close-up lens, the adapter allows the attachment of 39mm filters and serves as a lens hood to deflect unwanted light and protect the lens.

  • 40mm provides ideal 'normal' focal length and welcomed alternative to more common 35mm and 50mm lenses
  • Smooth and precise manual focusing in a compact, well-designed, classic form
  • Multicoated lenses with 2 aspherical elements create very sharp images with minimal aberration
  • CPU contacts communicate exposure and metering information to camera for auto exposure, shutter speed, ISO and flash applications
  • Included close-up lens offers macro shooting with 9.85" (25 cm) minimum focus distance
  • 39-52mm adapter attaches close-up lens and optional 39mm filters and provides glare reduction and protection for lens.

What an amazing read about this exact lens, by French Engineer Julien Hautcoeur living in Canada who is an actual user and a pretty good writer too:

And...what other buyers said in response to his review:

  • "The 40mm focal length is great, my favorite. Close enough to 50mm without being too long, and just a little tighter than the 35mm. Nice pics!"

  • "I agree that this is a great little lens… Actually makes it reasonable to take my D800 out for a walk or hike…..And 40mm is a bit of a sweet spot for me too for street and travel…."

  • "One thing I find with manual focus is the pictures I decide not to take. With auto focus I snap everything, then cull during a break, or after returning home. With manual the number of captures drop, but the percentage of keepers increases. Quality vs quantity."

  • "Finally! Thanks for that very nice review! This is my favorite lens on my 6D. For what the 40mm Ultron is, this lens is much underestimated and should be in every dslr-photobag… It is so versatile and with the close-up lens good for macro pics too. If I had to choose one lens only, it would be the 40mm Ultron."

  • "The 28mm color skopar is another very nice and small Voigtlander lens. Highly recommended! Very sharp and clear wide open but needs to be stopped down to f5.6 – f8.0 for edge sharpness if one does pixel peeping. In practice, this 28mm makes a good travel combo. See Ming Thein’s review. Both lenses deliver very good IQ. Some technical reviews and MTF charts do not correspond with my very good personal experience. For what I use these lenses, they are close to or on par with Zeiss glass, the Canon EF 2.0/35mm IS and the EF 2.0/135mm L. That should be good enough for most of us…"

40mm f/2.0 Ultron SL II = Top of Top! (sic)

I'm so happy I bought this product. This lens is really worth it's price! I used to take pictures with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D on my D700, which is really an excellent lens. But when I made my first shots with my new 40mm Voigtlander, the results were even better! Very very sharp! This lens is also more versatile than a 50mm lens for travel.

I do also appreciate it's lightweight; it really counts when having it on your shoulder for the entire day! Great performance,if U get one, you will not be disappointed!! The manual focus feels great and it's a real pleasure to use! Also this lens is very well made(Anodized Aluminum),and it will last forever...

Ken Rockwell

Used extensively by the one-and-only Ken Rockwell: "It's a joy to use: its focus feels better than my Nikon lenses! I never thought it would come to this, but this Voigtländer lens is better than Nikon's own lenses: it has better optics, better mechanics, and better ergonomics. How about that! 40mm is the ideal normal lens. It's never too long like a 50mm, and never too short like a 35mm."

End of very detailed review summates: "The Voigtländer 40mm f/2 SL-II is an optically and ergonomically superb lens. I am quite surprised, as this is the first time I've ever seen a lens whose optics and ergonomics I prefer to Nikon's own classic manual-focus lenses."

And three more buyer responses:

From Brian:

  • "If I had to pick one focal length it would be 40mm. It is the magic spot for me."

From Diz:

  • "This lens is a permanent fixture on my Nikon FM3a. I believe the focal length to be more representative what our eyes see than a 50mm. I really like how solid it is built. The focusing ring is perfectly balanced (smoothness vs. resistance)."

From Sweden's Steven Norquist:

  • "The 40mm Ultron is a fantastic lens that I have used for years on my Pentax K1000SE. It has one of the smoothest most silky focus mechanisms I have ever felt on any lens ever. The lens is very sharp, has high apparent acutance so things have a grainy look to them on film which I like. The colors really pop on this lens and contrast is very high. Bokeh is very busy....this lens is more like a photo journal lens designed to be sharp all the time and wide enough to get it all in but still get you close to the subject. I can’t recommend this lens highly enough. P.S. I Forgot to mention the lens comes with a wonderful closeup lens that lets you do real sharp macro photos!"
